The oil spill has created SO much loss…

“This is breaking people,” property owner Patrick Shay, not pictured, said of the spill’s effect on Grand Isle residents.

Celebrate Art this weekend with “Public Art Party” from ForYourArt

Published on Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

I love walking in Beverly Hills. It seems no matter where you are, there is something to interest the aesthetically driven. Award winning man made design is everywhere, and our parks and public spaces contain so many beautiful plants and flowers that a short respite in any one of these spaces could refresh and inspire. This Saturday afternoon we plan to “tour” our neighborhood public art spaces and enjoy all the events that the fine folks in the ForYourArt have arranged for us in order to party for our art. It’s sort of like a progressive dinner but with looser schedule. I have to say that the printable brochure that I excerpted above is so beautiful that I took a little extra time to read all the cool things they have in store. Here’s another reason to love my Beverly Hills!

Meet the Dog Whisperer and Cecelia from Weeds at the PDC next month!

Published on Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

PDC, and as is evidenced by the photo, was quite at home there.

For this reason alone I would encourage you to attend “Patterns for Paws” at the PDC on July 15th – a place so paw – friendly is a very natural place to have a fundraiser for our friends with paws, but there are so many more! As an attendee you also have the bonus of knowing that you are supporting the Amanda Foundation, which is “the only non-profit animal charity in the Los Angeles area to own and operate its own full service Veterinary practice”, and it is located right here in Beverly Hills. I also would go to meet Cesar Millan and Elizabeth Perkins (LOVE her), and their dogs. For the Gleeks they have Dianna Agron! Now I just wonder where I put Louis’ tux…

Michael Jackson’s kids and family sign commemorative belt

Published on Saturday, May 29th, 2010

When Michael Jackson died I recounted my sadness and recalled that it was much like the day Elvis died. Again the similarities are eerie in the news that a blinged out limited edition commemorative belt has been designed by Simon Tavassoli of bbsimon of Newport Beach. The first belt has the distinction of the only item in the world that has been signed by all of Jackson’s children and his parents in an effort to pay tribute to the artist and raise funds for the Jackson Family Foundation to build a cultural center in Gary Indiana, the Jackson’s native hometown. The signed belt is the first in a series of 7,000, and will be priced with the auction. The other 6,999 belts will be available for $1500.

But Beverly Hills Mom has other scoop! Amiable Beverly Hills art dealer David Streets, along with BHMom is an alumnus of Bryant Galleries, and he has actually worn the belt and allowed me to post photos of his moment with what is sure to be a must have item for the collector of all things Michael.

She’s Having a Baby Event: haute baby style at the Hilton

Published on Monday, May 24th, 2010

Style expert and baby event doyenne Jayneoni Moore’s “She’s Having a Baby Event” at the Beverly Hilton was THE place to be on Sunday for moms and moms-to-be for the ultimate in style, design and luxury items for baby. The event was kicked off by the very talented actress / mom Tisha Campbell discussing what it’s like to bring home a new baby to an older child with autism. I’ve always thought she was one of the funniest females in Hollywood since her days as Martin’s fiancée.

I thought I was seeing triple, but in fact it was the Dahm triplets! Phenomenally, identical triplet sisters Erica, Nicole, and Jaclyn managed to become pregnant and give birth to three girls within a month of one another and have channeled their pre-mom playmate personae and popularity of Erica with fans of her inlaws (that would be Dr. and Mrs Phil) into (among other things) designing fabrics for the swaddle set.

As an interior designer, I am accustomed to roaming the mammoth vendor events of my profession, and am not easily impressed with much that is design related, especially when it comes to nurseries and party planning, but this baby shower did not disappoint. Every product that was displayed was of superlative quality and the expectant mother could have dropped in to the event and found an expert to handle all the finer points of baby style, safe gear and nurturing. I was amazed at the talent and caring that it took to create the products that lined the aisles. Real standouts in style and substance were Little Crown Interiors, Project Nursery, Wendy Anne, and The Cake Mamas. I found these mompreneurs to be seriously sharp and stylish!

Letting the pictures do the talking…

Published on Friday, May 21st, 2010

I honestly think that this time of year is busier than any. We have LOTS of birthday parties to attend, since the Critter’s buddies were all born around the same time, and the weather is so nice I start to think about the summer wardrobes for our family. I’ve also been working on a new design project, and now the Critter is big enough to run around the showrooms while I shop for clients. He is becoming very spoiled since all these glamorous spaces are kind enough to put out candy, and he’s like a sugar seeking missile now that he’s wise to this. It’s blatant bribery, the price is that I have to let him run raving wild across each floor of the PDC before he crashes.

He has it pretty good, right? Sugar, shopping, and partying are my personal favorites!

Mother’s Day redux

Published on Monday, May 10th, 2010

The holiday was first about my killing myself to get my mom’s gift to Mississippi in time for the exalted day. In spite of the fact that Joel from Brown’s Fine Art and I had conspired in the fall of last year to deal with this issue, I did not find the time to do anything about it until, oh, Monday before Mother’s Day. I painted this canvas awhile ago, but it never naturally found its home. My mother collects very fine art, so when she casually mentioned that she would like to have the painting I was very excited. I’ve painted quite a few works, and the one other painting she really liked was lost in Hurricane Katrina. I was quite eager to get this to her – but in classic fashion, I had to make it extremely complicated. First, the painting is quite large – three feet by five feet. And I didn’t really want a frame for it so much as I wanted a nice fastener to complement the provencial French antiques in her bedroom – there was enough hardwood in the room already. The solutions? Send Joel the unstretched rolled canvas. Buy thick gallery stretchers for the canvas and have them sent directly to Joel. Buy fabulous two inch wide cotton velvet ribbon and send directly to Joel. Send Joel directions for the perfect bow to festoon the top of the painting. Buy one and a half inch nailhead to attach the ribbon around the edges of the stretched canvas in a wonderful hand gold leafed finish. Great!

Not great – there is no such nailhead finished off in this way, so I have to find the size and then do it myself, since you know I am an expert at gold leafing techniques (not). When it dawned on me that I had exactly two days to arrange purchases and deliveries, get the nailhead finished and get it all to Joel with time to spare for his work. I called Troy, the concierge of my mother’s condo building, to ask him if Joel could access my mom’s condo when she wasn’t at home, and he was enthusiastically helpful in playing our little spy game to surprise her.

At this point you may wonder why I would go through all this when I could have just sent a lovely card and flowers, but the designer in me had go ahead and finish this mission. I realize most people don’t care how many steps go into a thing hanging on the wall in someone’s house. But I knew it would be fabulous and Mom would love a surprise! So I surrendered to my project addiction and got it all together.

Mission accomplished per Joel at 4:30 PM central Saturday before Mother’s Day. The Eagle landed Sunday evening when she returned from visiting friends on the Coast. In these photos you can check out the process of leafing the nailhead, and the photos of the painting installed in her bedroom. My Mississippi conspirators pulled this off without a hitch and I can’t thank them enough!

Part two of Mother’s Day here in the ‘hood focused on relaxation, snuggles, kisses and a killer two hour mani pedi with massage. Accents of the day were flowers, tear inducing cards, and a fun three way conversation with my mom and my brother. It was perfect – thanks honey xoxo

Katrina and now an oil spill? Residents on the Gulf Coast must feel like Job

Published on Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

I have been just sick about the news of the spill. I am taken back to 2005 as we waited for Katrina to hit. I had just finished helping my mother with remodeling and decorating her beach house in Gulfport, Mississippi and was planning a week on the Coast of antiquing and cocktail lunches of jumbo Gulf shrimp. The people of the Coast have suffered and this is really too much -waiting for an inevitable disaster to hit is the worst kind of torpor.

Thanks to Beth Ousley for letting me know about this informative site on what is happening in the Gulf of Mexico. I am praying that a resolution is reached soon. You can find a photo gallery of the disaster and the mediation of the damage is here.
