For all those who love Trader Joe’s

Published on Saturday, February 14th, 2009

For those of you who don’t have Trader Joe’s in your city, it’s an independent grocery chain that manufactures most of its products, and there are LOTS of things to get addicted to. I must admit that until I became a wife and mother – Trader Joe’s was a place to buy protein bars, bottled water, orchids and cashews. I now have to make at least one trip to each to Pavillions, Whole Foods, or TJ’s per week. At this point I have probably tried out every single thing from TJ’s freezer section on my little family.

This video is so incredibly accurate in its description of every last one of the Trader Joe’s stores. It doesn’t matter if you’re in West Hollywood or Woodland Hills, all the annoying things portrayed in this little tribute are part of the TJ’s experience.

New developments in the world of textiles…

Published on Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

I noticed here that Chella Textiles has launched a new design. It always gives me a little thrill when I see that this company has continued to thrive.

I first met Lee Menichella when I was an intern at Tricia Wilson and Associates, my first foray into hospitality design. He was one of my favorite vendor representatives, bringing us fabulous product any time we needed from the Oakmont showroom, which is now Cowtan and Tout, in addition to an untold number of textile companies from all over the world. Lee was one of the best reps EVER – he was always funny, nice, and got us the sampling we needed for our presentations.

I remember meeting with him in the first Alexandra Anderson Design Atelier, (aka my first tiny apartment on Robbins Drive here in Beverly Hills) to consult with him about what I’d like to see in outdoor fabrics. He had noticed that I knew the diff between my jacquards and my grospointes and so on, and knew I had a love for textiles. We had lots of fun talking about different projects and projecting the future, which became what is now Chella. Chella has brought the options of indoor textiles to the exterior, making design for outdoor spaces so much more creative. Yay for Lee!

Whaaaaat? No Red Carpet?!!

…if she knows about the article today in the New York Times. Apparently folks (like me) are only watching the pre-Oscar red carpet so that they can see who is wearing what, and then checking out to whatever else is on that night. The Times says that the presenters for the Oscars will be a secret this year, and some will not walk the carpet in order to surprise the audience with their fabulousness.

I wonder what this will do to the business of the stylists like Rachel…OMG!

In case you were wondering – I know I was

Where do we get the red carpet? As design professional, I wondered who among the masses of manufacturers gets the “get” of the Presidential Inauguration? According to Mairi Beautyman of INTERIOR DESIGN., the official carpet chosen for the inaugural podium was provided by Bentley Prince Street.

I wasn’t surprised, as this is a familiar vendor that we primarily use in corporate environments. The carpet trade has come under fire in recent years, as consumers constantly are looking for a “greener” solution while still maintaining beauty and durability.

Ms. Beautyman writes:
“The manufacturer also supplied an environmentally friendly carpet to the 2009 Green Inaugural Ball, held on January 19th. Billed as climate neutral, the green carpet is certified to the gold level of NSF-140, the Sustainable Carpet Assessment Standard, and made with 10 percent post-consumer recycled content and 100 percent renewable electrical energy. To completely offset its climate impact, Bentley Prince Street purchased emission reduction credits through its Cool Carpet program.

Both carpets will be recycled via the manufacturer’s Rentry 2.0 program, saving 500 pounds of landfill waste.

“Bentley Prince Street is proud to participate in this historic moment for our nation and all it represents for the opportunity ahead,” says Anthony Minite, president of Bentley Prince Street. “And it was an honor to provide a truly green carpet for the first ever Green Inaugural Ball–a true celebration of both the inauguration and our own sustainability mission.”

Pantone and Gap love child Mimosa launch

…because you’ll be seeing it everywhere. Once color marketing and trend forecasters like Pantone and Color Marketing Group announce their predictions for popular color, manufacturers listen. Companies like the Gap and just about any retail manufacturer prepare their interpretations fashionable color the minute these reports are available and cater everything in their lines to coordinate these hues. If you find yourself asking what is it really that these people do, just imagine trying to explain a color to another person – one man’s red is another woman’s cerise.

These companies primarily identify and communicate color to the design industries. An offshoot of that function is that these companies forecast “new” colors for retail seasons. Manufacturers and designers join these groups in order to have access to their color card sets, which make our lives much less complicated. Want a new background for your website? Tell your webmaster to use color X from the Pantone system – most any graphic designer will be able to find that color in their trusty color card set and poof! If you desire to emote an image of hopefulness, energy, and optimism, this year you MUST use bright yellows.

Pantone’s offering for the season is PANTONE® 14-0848 Mimosa, as “the color yellow exemplifies the warmth and nurturing quality of the sun, properties we as humans are naturally drawn to for reassurance,” explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. “Mimosa also speaks to enlightenment, as it is a hue that sparks imagination and innovation.”

Color Marketing Group predicts:

“Purple, Purple, Purple! – Emerging as a hot fashion color last fall, purple is not just a fad — it’s an entrenched trend, strongly influenced by the election. (After all, red plus blue equals purple.) Look for a greyed-out violet that works equally well as an accent or a neutral, as well as redder, plummier purples and bluer-influenced fuchsias in a huge range of products. Purple is 2009’s “must have” color.

Blue is the New Green – Various greens have symbolized “green living” over the last few years, but in 2009 the “green” environmental message is delivered by the color blue. There are watery blues, sky blues and a whole range of blues that now represent our commitment to living on a greener planet.

Cooled-down, Greyed-out Browns and Greys – Complex neutrals satisfy our urge toward classic colors in an economically challenged time. They also bridge the area between black, which seems harsh, and brown, which doesn’t seem strong enough.

Yellow for Energy – The neutrals may have greyed, but look for lots and lots of bright vivid yellow to give us energy as we re-build the economy. It’s the stand-out accent color for 2009.

Bright Accents from India, China, and Turkey – The exotic has become the familiar. Oranges, turquoises and teals, reds, and yellows will abound in hues from far-away countries that now seem very near. They are the optimistic touches we crave.

White is now a Business Color – Technology has produced amazing new (and very practical) finishes, which helps explain why white is showing up everywhere, even in corporate board rooms. The contrasts are all in the finishes: matte versus gloss; shine and shimmer on reflective surfaces; textured whites versus smooth — all washable and cleanable. White also represents purity of thought, motive and result – exactly what we want from businesses now.

The Return of the “M” Word – It’s mauve. Remember mauve? An old color that looks new again, in dusty violet shades, mauve works as an accent but also serves now as a neutral, punched up by those bright Asian accents (orange, turquoise, teal, red, and yellow.) ”

I’ve been telling anyone who would listen for the last five years that the new milleneum will revive teal and mauve – so now you have it from the experts.

I watched this with my mouth open, eyes wide – my sweet friend Joanie is the woman behind the man who is Bradley Rapier who is the man behind the Groovaloos. And the Groovaloos are representing the USA in an international dance competition called Super Stars of Dance, hosted by none other than the Lord of the Dance.

And they are AWESOME! I literally burst into tears when they started announcing the scores for the performance – apparently the whole world loves their style, their message, and their moves. These are great people, and I am so excited and proud for them. Groove on Groovaloos!

A Fresh Outlook

seeing from many perspectives - Mississippi Museum of Art

Lord has it been a MONTH? I have most diligently updated my “Alexandra Out and About” section ( see? on the right there?) so that you have at least some idea of what’s been going on here in the ‘hood. I have to be honest, dear reader, I have just had other priorities this past month. I had a wonderful Christmas with family and a peaceful New Year. I’ve had old friends come back to life and one pass away. The Critter has learned to say “Uh oh” “no”, and sing chorus to the the Shoe Fairy song with Neil Patrick Harris. I’ve got a pile of cool things to show you, including my favorite thing from the Rothschild Collection, and you really MUST stop in at Tweak Boutique on Brighton – they’re having a great sale for three more weeks, then you can only be Tweak’ed by appointment.

From my email newsletters: Interior Design Top News Stories of 2008, and Interior Design Top Magazine Stories of 2008. Saves you some time by just pointing them out~

More later – much organization to be achieved for a successful 2009!

A girl and her gays

Published on Monday, December 8th, 2008

When my perfect Husband wonders what kinds of things I do when out with my gay friends I can now show him this and know that it explains everything. A girl could never get her hubby to do it like this…

Speaking of gays, The Critter’s favorite “uncle” has invited me to go to the Kathy Griffin show tomorrow night – watch the “out and about” section to the right of this post to see what’s happening!
